Tips to Sew Chiffon Fabric Outfits

Chiffon, being a synthetic textile, may be difficult to sew owing to its structure. The continued demand for Chiffon has prompted a plethora of fabric manufacturers in India to produce it. As I’ve noted before, chiffon may be difficult to sew. You can stitch this slippery fabric just as easily as I do by following my tried-and-true procedures, which I’ve outlined here.

Stabilize Chiffon

When working with chiffon, the first step is to “mount” the fabric on one or two pieces of tissue paper. The chiffon’s tendency to slide about will be reduced.

Instead of tissue paper, you may use a sprayable fabric stabilizer to give the chiffon some body and prevent it from sliding as you cut.

Try to only use the extra fine dressmaker pins when pinning chiffon; these pins are thinner and longer than standard pins, protecting your delicate fabric from punctures. Just to be safe, use them in the seam allowances of the cloth.

Cutting Chiffon

To avoid ripping the chiffon, make sure your shears, scissors, or rotary cutter are sharp and just cut through one layer at a time. The pattern pieces you cut out are likely to be off if you double it up as you would with other materials.

When hanging on a hanger, chiffon will “drop” since it is a “loose” fabric. Since this is the case, hanging the chiffon overnight after cutting out the shapes but before sewing them together is an absolute need. Though some advise adding weight may help, I find that doing so often results in unwanted fabric distortion. After it has been hung, the original pattern pieces may be used to “recut” the garment.

Sewing Chiffon

I find that a very thin, pointed needle works best for stitching chiffon. To avoid snagging the chiffon, it should also be fresh. My rule of thumb is to use a size 70/10 needle if working with chiffon.

If you’re hand-sewing the seams, it’s just as important to use the right stitch length as it is to use the right needle size. Although I usually use a shorter stitch length, I always make sure to test it out, along with the stitch tension, on a scrap of my chiffon before beginning the actual project.

Due to the delicate nature of chiffon, it has a tendency to become caught in the feed dogs of a sewing machine. To avoid this, always remember to keep the cloth in front of and behind the presser foot of your sewing machine securely in your hands.

Keep in mind that the feed dogs may catch and pucker chiffon if you attempt to drag it through the machine. To avoid causing any harm, you should take your time when sewing and always remove pins before stitching over them.

When stitching chiffon, some individuals like to use tissue paper. Thin paper may be sewed into a seam alongside the fabric to reduce slipperiness and then carefully removed when the seam is finished. Personally, I think it unnecessary, but if you’re a newbie sewer and chiffon is your first fabric, you could find it useful.
